Planning Contract to Develop an Environmental Data Management System for the National Archives & Records Administration (2007-2008)

NARA ArchivesThe Image Permanence Institute (IPI) has asked by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to develop a design and implementation plan for an intranet-based preservation system which would allow multiple users in different facilities to simultaneously access the raw environmental information recorded by the IPI Preservation Environment Monitors® (PEMs) already installed at each NARA facility, as well as the interpreted data provided by Climate Notebook®.

Our final proposal for implementation of a secure networked environmental data management that would meet NARA’s needs was forwarded to NARA’s preservation administration for consideration for funding. The system was designed to:

  • Provide a wide range of search functions and analysis capabilities including graphs and statistics which illustrate compliance with NARA standards
  • Reduce the amount of time staff currently spend gathering, managing, interpreting and analyzing data
  • Allow real-time consultation among users in various parts of the country
  • Maintain historical data and associated documentation
  • Provide multiple levels of access assigned by central office administrators with specific permissions for use and viewing of data
  • Include reliable data security through access control and multiple levels of backup

IPI can work with your organization to develop an Environmental Monitoring and Analysis project that fits your needs, from designing an environmental management program, purchasing monitoring equipment, evaluating HVAC design plans, review of existing mechanical systems, energy saving opportunities, risk analysis, and more.
