Black and White and Red All Over: Understanding Silver Gelatin Print Deterioration

James M. Reilly, Director of the Image Permanence Institute at Rochester Institute of Technology, will be presenting "Black and White and Red All Over: Understanding Silver Gelatin Print Deterioration", which will explore the root causes and visible symptoms of black and white print deterioration. He will explain how to recognize image oxidation—the most common kind of deterioration—and how to distinguish it from effects of poor fixing and washing. Much has been learned on this topic in the last 25 years, some of it quite surprising. For example too much ‘archival washing’ can actually cause a print to fade. He will show examples and offer advice on housing and display.
