New Publication: IPI’s Guide to Sustainable Preservation Practices

IPI's Guide to Sustainable Preservation Practices for Managing Storage EnvironmentsIPI’s Guide to Sustainable Preservation Practices for Managing Storage Environments,Version 2.0 – July 2012, is now available for purchase! The design of this comprehensive and easy to understand reference book was guided by the same concept that is presented in the Sustainable Preservation Practices workshop series – to enable collections care and facilities management staff in cultural institutions to avoid risk to collections while they support sustainability efforts and pursue opportunities for energy cost reduction.

Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, this publication provides extensive background information, guidance for data analysis, team development and effective environmental management strategies, and a bibliography of all the latest research on managing the environment for preservation. The guidebook is divided into four primary sections:

  • Section One focuses on what you need to know about the environment, its effect on material decay and the primary factors that shape the storage climate. Use this section as an introduction or a refresher course depending on your background.
  • Section Two details what you need to do to accurately document both the storage environment and associated climate control systems, and how to use this knowledge to effectively analyze risk and improve preservation quality.
  • Section Three was designed to guide and focus environmental management activities and highlight opportunities for energy savings and sustainable practices.
  • Section Four includes an annotated bibliography, regional exercises, HVAC system documentation worksheets and other information for your use.

The Sustainability Guidebook was identified as one of the most valuable elements of the workshops in both Series I and II:

"The guidebook includes good explanations of key concepts and helpful terminology to bridge divides between staff responsibilities. I plan to share it with other staff and use it frequently."

“The guidebook is very well-written, organized, and ideal for practical application.”

“The guidebook gives good detail and illustration... it is an excellent resource and reference.”
