Media Collection Surveys
In addition to maintaining the proper storage environment, monitoring the condition of the materials in your collection is an important part of good collection management.
At an institution's request, IPI will send out a survey team to sample and inspect photograph, cinema, and microfilm collections. Typically, the survey consists of two visits: During the first visit, A-D Strips are placed with a random sampling of the collection for testing; on a subsequent visit, the A-D Strips are retrieved and the condition of the collection materials and their enclosures is evaluated and recorded in detail. IPI analyzes this data and provides the institution with recommendations for practical ways to improve the quality of its storage environment. IPI has performed collection surveys for many major cultural institutions, including the Library of Congress and the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration.
